Women’s Health & Image
We believe that overall health and a positive image begins at your mouth!
The Plaque-Heart Connection: Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, as well as the number one cause of disability. In his article, “The Link Between Heart and Gum Diseases,” Dr. Ken Kornman notes that the chronic, low-grade inflammation caused by periodontal disease “appears to increase the risk for heart disease and stroke substantially.” Dr. Kornman notes that the good news is that if we reduce the inflammation caused by periodontal disease, current research indicates that we can also reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes which are common results of cardiovascular disease. See your dentist to develop a routine for reducing inflammation caused by periodontal disease and plaque.
Your Smile Improves Your Image: It’s no secret that impressions are made quickly— the image you convey reflects your health and state of mind. A clean, healthy smile is often the first, and best, picture you project to others. In addition to helping you maintain general oral health through regularly scheduled cleaning (which helps to whiten staining), we can vastly improve your smile and image with professional whitening, bonding and veneers. Please visit our website, www.itanidental.com, for detailed information on our services offered for smile improvement.
Silver is Best for Anniversaries: Fillings don’t last forever, with time they are apt to recede, causing surrounding gaps, seepage, cracked teeth and even infections. If your amalgam fillings are over ten years old, consult with your dentist to see if they should be replaced. You may also consider replacing them with new enamel-toned filings, which are considered by many to be safer and considerably more reliable when it comes to maintaining tooth structure. They also hide the fact that you’ve had a cavity!
Itani Dental provides a full range of services to remove plaque, improve the appearance of your smile, and replace old fillings that may be receding. Actual client results pictured here:

Women’s Health & The Blue Zones
It is alarming to note that our nation is on the whole growing more obese, and for the first time in history the life expectancy of our children is expected to drop! According to certain studies, only 25% of your longevity is determined by genetics, the other 75% is related to lifestyle. Author and researcher, Dan Buettener, has traveled the world to study areas with high concentrations of people over 100 years old, and has studied what aspects of their lives contribute to their longevity. Together with the National Institute on Aging he has identified these areas as “The Blue Zones,” and one of them is right here in Loma Linda, California (the others are Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Ikaria, Greece; and Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica)!
The Blue Zones project found that there were 9 characteristics that these areas with concentrations of centenarians shared. They include: environments that encourage movement, the right (positive) outlook and a sense of purpose, eating wisely (including lean meats and keeping your later meals small), a sense of community and connection (and social circles that encourage healthy living). For more information on this fascinating, health-promoting project, go to www.bluezones.com.
Daily Dose of Cute
Sometimes we just need a moment of cute to ease the stressors of modern living. This baby has no need for laughing yoga…
Overcoming Treatment Anxiety
There are various reasons why patients may develop dental stress and phobia—we help patients understand and overcome their fears in whatever manner is best for each patient. Depending on the level of your reaction, and the origin of your fear, we suggest that you adopt the philosophy of “getting to good.” This might mean taking small steps to overcome learned or perceived negativities when it comes to care. We can segment out appointments if this eases a patient’s anxiety, or we can bundle all procedures into one visit to ease the tensions of patients who would prefer to avoid the dental office as much as possible! We suggest you utilize positive conversation with your dentist or hygienist and take whatever time you need beforehand to call us with questions or concerns about your appointment. Stop along the way during treatments or procedures to ask any questions, or even if you just need a break. Some patients have reported that self-talk or bio-feedback might be helpful as well.
Be sure you are comfortable with your dentist, and discuss topical anesthetics to numb your gums to further ease stress from routine care. We are committed to working with you to overcome your fear, so that we can proceed with treatment and overall care. If you still cannot “get to good” by working past your anxiety, or if you are a patient with special needs, you may need to explore the levels of sedation that Itani Dental offers.
